Moredun Research Institute Board

The Moredun Research Institute is a private company, limited by guarantee and is also a registered charity. Its mission is to conduct distinguished scientific research on infectious diseases in livestock and of comparative relevance to man. The Institute is a subsidiary of The Moredun Foundation and is one of the Scottish Agricultural and Biological Research Institutes receiving sponsorship from the Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD)

The aims of the Institute are:

  • To carry out innovative basic and strategic multidisciplinary research on diseases which undermine biological efficiency, impair animal welfare or threaten public health.
  • To develop strategies for improved control and prevention of disease, thereby furthering animal and human well-being and encouraging sustainable agriculture.
  • To contribute new knowledge to biological science, comparative medicine, environmental protection and public health.
  • To maintain specialist diagnostic and disease surveillance services to facilitate epidemiological investigations, and early awareness of emerging problems.

The Moredun Research Institute Board

The Moredun Research Institute Board consists of a maximum of nine members and a minimum of three. Appointment decisions rest ultimately with the Board of the Holding Company - The Moredun Foundation. Membership of the Board and the Committees of the Board are described in the Annual Report and Financial Statements of the Institute. Appointments are made following the Appointments Code Of Practice For Moredun Research Institute. This includes a Code of Practice for Board Members.

The founding principles of Moredun Research Institute appointments procedures are to ensure that the Board is properly represented and that the procedures are transparent. The recommendations of the Committee on Standards in Public Life (Nolan: First Report, May 1995) have been adopted to ensure the appointments process ensures appointment on merit and a quality outcome. The Board has adopted the Standards Commission for Scotland - Standards in Public Life, Model Code of Conduct for members of Developed Public Bodies (2002), embodying the Seven Principles of Public Life. Members are expected to uphold the seven principles: responsibility; merit; independent scrutiny; equal opportunities; probity; openness and transparency; and proportionality.
